Which Is More Important For Our Health, Diet Or Exercise? Stirring Discovery

Which is more important, diet or exercise? Researchers made new discoveries regarding lower mortality risk and longevity.

An international team of scientists led by the University of Sydney, Australia, who published a study that targeted 360,000 people in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in July 2022, has found that people who have intense physical activity and a healthy diet have the lowest risk of premature death and high longevity.

In addition, they found that vigorous exercise is not enough to counteract the health effects of a poor diet, according to ABC Net.

The researchers have bad news for anyone who thinks that strenuous exercise can compensate for a diet that favors the fast-food (body-toxic) diet over fruits and vegetables.

Healthy Diet And Exercise - The Right Answer For Your Body

The study led by experts from the University of Sydney in Australia, along with colleagues from the Universities of Palermo and Brescia, Italy, Boston, USA, and Oslo, Norway, revealed that people who had a high level of physical activity, as well as a high-quality diet in terms of health, had the lowest risk of premature death and high longevity.

The researchers examined the independent and combined effects of diet and exercise on cardiovascular disease, cancer, and all-cause mortality, using data from Biobank, the UK database of 360,600 adults.

It should be noted that experts have shown that a healthy diet of the highest quality consists of eating at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, two portions of fish a week, and reduced consumption of red meat, mainly processed meat.

The analysis found that people who had a high level of physical activity, as well as a high-quality diet, had a 17% lower risk of premature mortality from all causes, 19% from cardiovascular disease, and 27% from certain cancers, compared to those who had a poor diet and were physically inactive.

"Some people may think they could offset the impacts of a poor diet with high levels of exercise or offset the impacts of low physical activity with a high-quality diet, but the data shows that unfortunately, this is not the case," said Dr. Melody Ding from the University of Sydney.

The new study found there was still some benefit in either exercising or eating a high-quality diet, but its best if you could have both.
