Hermès

The vintage Hermès jewelry, bags and accessories can make every woman feel glamorous and confident. The famous French brand is synonymous with luxury and perfection. The company’s philosophy can be summarized by a single quote of former CEO Jean-Louis Dumas – “We don’t have a policy of image, we have a policy of product”.

The authority of the Hermès Fashion House is unshakable, it is an ultra-luxury success story based on the principles of highest quality and refinement.

The Success Story of the Hermès Brand

The first customers of the French house - princes of Wales, czars, and the European aristocracy - probably did not have to wait for a long period when they placed an order at Hermès. Now, however, one can buy the company's products only by entering a long waiting list.

Being one of the oldest surviving fashion labels, Hermès was founded in 1837 by Thierry Hermès. Initially, the store based on the Grands Boulevards in Paris was specialized in harnesses and bridles. The Hermès craftsmen worked only for the European aristocracy. It is even said that frequently balls or coronation festivities were postponed until the master craftsmen finished the accessories for the carriages and horses of the crowned heads.

Hermès is a serious family business. Hermès` founder, Thierry Hermès passed the store to his son, Charles-Émile Hermès. In 1914 when Thierry’s son took over the company, Hermès was given an exclusive right to the zipper and so was the first brand to bring it to France. It was even called `The Hermes Fastener`. They created a gold jacket with a zipper for Edward, the Prince of Wales soon after.

Charles-Émile Hermès passed his business to his grandsons, Adolphe and Émile-Maurice. The next heir was the first to not be related by blood. Robert Dumas was Émile-Maurice’s son-in-law and added Hermès to his name when he took over the family business.

Jean-Louis Dumas, the son of Robert Dumas-Hermès, became chairman in 1978. When he took over the brand, the company was already failing. Dumas had the firm concentrate on silk and leather goods and ready-to-wear, adding new product groups to those made with its traditional techniques. Hermès profits were 50 million dollars in 1978 and by 1990 they have soared to 460 million.

What Makes the Hermès Bags Special

The first leather bag Created by Hermès was created in the name of love. Émile-Maurice designed the product for his wife in 1922. In a huge display of devotion, Émile-Maurice did what few husbands would. When his wife couldn’t find a bag in all the Paris that she liked, he made one for her instead.

Hermes created the brand of naming bags after famous and glamorous women. The first iconic Hermes bag appeared in 1935 and was named in 1956 the `Kelly bag`. A photo of Grace Kelly, the princess of Monaco at that time, was released in 1956, showing her holding a Hermes "Sac à dépêches" bag in “Life” magazine. It was suggested the well-placed bag was there to hide her pregnancy and the public coined the term the `Kelly bag`. Hermes made the name official soon after.

The `Birkin Bag` was named after actress Jane Birkin because she wanted a bigger version of `Kelly Bag`. From 1978, Hermès was run by Jean-Louis Dumas. He met Jane Birkin in the early 1980s by chance and she commented on her `Kelly Bag` by being too small for the daily use when he helped her pick something she had dropped. He wrote down some notes and so the Hermès`Birkin Bag` was born. Jane Birkin gets a small royalty for each bag was sold and donates it to charity.

The Constance (favorite of Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis), Garden Party, Picotin models remain the subjects of desire for many fashionistas too. Each has its legend, its cult, and even philosophy. For example, the name of the Constance bag translates as "consistency" and symbolizes loyalty to taste, fashion, and Hermès.

The construction of each Hermès` Kelly bag`, for example, requires 18 hours to fully realize. It takes 48 hours of work just to make a single `Birkin bag`, crafting it from the highest quality leather. Hermès's leathers come from all over the world. This is why the waiting list is so long and the price is so high. Customers may currently wait from six months to two years for the delivery of one of the house’s signature Hermès bags.

The Chic Allure of the Vintage Hermès Jewelry

The late ’30s brought to the fashion pedestals the collection of "Chaine d'ancre" jewelry. Robert Dumas found inspiration in a ship anchor chain to design a bracelet. The "Chaîne d'ancre" is a naturally balanced Hermès jewel with a sporty yet chic allure. The chain is made up of links designed in different shapes – polished, circular-grained, or twisted. The variety of curves and volumes bring forth a multitude of exclusive necklaces, rings, earrings, and bracelets.

Possibly the most popular accessory from Hermès and a worldwide famed bracelet, the `Clic Clac H` earned its fame following the sound it makes when fastened or unfastened. The solid ovoid of enamel and gold first launched in 2000 is linked with a chunky Hermes “H”. The bracelet gives a rather casual and feminine vibe and comes in many beautiful color combinations which are classic and timeless. While the bracelet looks stunning just on its own, it’s also a perfect piece to stack with other bracelets.

Unlike most of the Hermès bracelets, the `Clic Clac H` is not made of leather. Instead, it is made using either gold-plated or palladium-plated metal and highlighted by enamel. The bracelet has an oval shape to fit the comfort of a wrist and the item comes in three different sizes, fitting the character of every fashionista.

For years, Hermès has partnered with Tuareg tribesmen for silver jewelry. The Saharan nomads' traditional motifs are often mirrored in various Hermès products, such as the Hermès enamel bangles. These arm totems, made of gold-plated hardware and the humbler glass, represent small markers of glamour and achievement. The Hermès enamel bangles are available in three sizes — large, thin, and extra-thin. The Hermès bracelets manufactured in Nontron, France, combine a range of techniques that use the skills of Hermès’s many métiers: screenprinting, hand-applied chromolithography, and the leather and saddlery department, the starting place for so many Hermès’s icons.

The Hermès Brand, an Eternal Symbol of Luxury
