The Discovery of the Third-Largest Diamond in the World
The diamond company Debswana announced the discovery of a huge 1,098-carat diamond in Botswana. It is said to be the third-largest diamond ever unearthed.
This precious gemstone, discovered on 1st June 2021, was presented to the country's president, Mokgweetsi Masisi, in the capital Gaborone.
According to Debswana director Lynette Armstrong, it is considered the third-largest diamond in the world. Debswana is jointly owned by the famous South African diamond company De Beers and the state-owned Okavango Diamond Company.
"This is the largest diamond recovered by Debswana in its history of over 50 years of operation", Lynette Armstrong said.

"From our preliminary analysis, it could be the third-largest gemstone in the world. We still have to decide whether to sell it through De Beers or by the state-owned Okavango Diamond Company”, added the director of Debswana.
The largest known diamond - "Cullinan" - has over 3,100 carats, and was discovered in South Africa in 1905.
The second one, weighing 1,109 carats, was found in 2015 in the Karowe mine in northeastern Botswana, the largest diamond producer in Africa.
