GIA-Certified Diamonds - Here Is Everything You Need To Know

If you want to buy diamonds, be sure to get GIA-certified ones. This is no small matter. Here is everything you need to know about this topic!

Buying GIA-certified diamonds assures the buyer that the amount you invest truly reflects the quality of the stone or diamond jewelry.

GIA is an acronym for the Gemological Institute of America - the world's leading geological research institute, as noted by Accent Jewelry.

Since we are talking about the most precious stone and type of jewelry in the world, it is a good idea to take this aspect into consideration with all due seriousness. That's why we recommend buying diamond jewelry only if they have a GIA certificate.

What Are The GIA-Certified Diamonds

Many people have already heard about the "4C" of a diamond, that is to say - carat, color, clarity, and cut. But in the diamond industry, the fifth "C" often comes up, which refers to GIA certification.

A diamond's GIA certificate is a report drawn up by a gemological expert, listing the gemstone's individual characteristics, quality, and sometimes intrinsic value.

Why why is diamond certification necessary? Because jewelry and precious gemstones are more than simple accessories, they are an investment, and to make sure that the price you pay reflects their true value, a GIA certificate is the safest and most reliable solution.

The diamond certificate was created out of a desire to protect the buyer, to be sure that the gemstone they are about to purchase is real and above all qualitative. A GIA certificate, for example, eliminates the chances of buying a diamond that has been overpriced by the seller.

Who Can Certify Diamonds?

There are several internationally recognized institutions that offer certificates for diamonds such as the American Gem Society (AGS), the International Gemological Institute (IGI), and the European Gemological Laboratories (EGL).

But the best-known and most trusted institution in the precious gemstone industry is the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).

Diamonds and gemstone jewelry can only be certified by gemologists who have graduated from a gemological school.

Therefore, if you want a GIA certificate for your diamond or jewelry, you will have to go to a GIA-licensed gemologist or buy your jewelry from a retailer that already offers it with such a certificate.

What is GIA?

The Gemological Institute of America is a non-profit organization that researches gemstones, educates gemstone professionals, and sets the standards that determine the quality of diamonds.

GIA was founded in 1931 by Robert M. Shipley and is an authority in the field of diamonds and the most prestigious institution in the world.

The GIA's mission is to protect all buyers and sellers of gemstones by creating and maintaining standards for evaluating gem quality.

In 1940, Robert M. Shipley created the famous "4C" diamond grading criteria, which in 1953 became a universal benchmark in diamond grading. Their grading systems serve as a standard of excellence for the gemstone industry, and today GIA certificates are among the most widely used.

What Does A GIA Certificate Contain?

All certificates must contain information about the 4Cs of diamonds: carat, color, clarity, and cut. In addition to these, details of the diamond's fluorescence and measurements should also be mentioned.

GIA certificates contain much more detail than other certificates. The diamond is evaluated, measured, and examined by trained eyes using a jeweler's loupe, microscope, and other specific tools.

Following the evaluation, detailed information about the diamond will be specified on the certificate: inclusions, existing inscriptions, symmetry of the diamond, etc. It may also specify whether or not the stone has been treated.

It is important to know that experienced gemologists will meticulously analyze the 4Cs and offer their professional opinion on the diamond or jewelry in question.

Now that you know all this information it is important to mention that not all diamonds are GIA-certified attesting to their quality and value. But it is important to know that a diamond with a certificate is worth much more than one without.

This is everything you need to know about GIA-certified diamonds.
