Cannes Film Festival: Princess Diana's Nieces Amelia & Eliza Had A Stunning Appearance
35 years after Princess Diana made a sensation at Cannes Film Festival, her 29-year-old twin nieces stepped out on the red carpet looking just as glamourous.
Princess Diana's nieces, twins Lady Amelia Spencer and Lady Eliza Spencer, made their debut on the red carpet at the Cannes International Film Festival at the premiere of "Top Gun: Maverick."
Amelia and Eliza are the daughters of Diana's brother, Charles (58), 9th Earl Spence. As an interesting fact, Princess Diana made her debut at the same film festival in 1987, at the age of 26. Princess Diana attended a gala night honoring actor Sir Alec Guinness alongside Prince Charles. Diana and Charles were married between 1981 and 1996. Princess Diana passed away on August 31, 1997, following a car accident in Paris, France.
The two beautiful Spencer twins wore creations by designer Alberta Ferretti and Chopard jewelry. Amelia wore a one-shoulder dress while Eliza opted for a dress with a halter neckline and intricate beading.
"We were thrilled to be wearing some gorgeous b dresses by Alberta Ferretti, as well as the most amazing jewelry by Chopard, of course. As Amelia had chosen a beautiful black pleated gown, she wanted a pop of color, so she chose emeralds - the most incredible earrings, ring, and bracelet, featuring 24 carats. For Eliza, there was a lot of silver in her gown, so she chose white diamonds instead, totaling 32 carats! We felt incredibly glamorous, particularly in the jewels," the twins said for Tatler.
Amelia & Eliza Had A Special Connection With Princess Diana
Amelia and Eliza were only 5 years old when Princess Diana passed away.
"We always just knew her as our aunt," Eliza told Tatler, via PEOPLE. "Growing up in South Africa, I really had very little idea of how significant she was in the world until I was much older."
The twins had a special connection with Diana, who never had daughters of her own. Eliza said the beautiful princess was "incredibly warm, maternal, and loving".
"She always made an effort to connect with us as children and had a talent for reading children’s," they said.
Eliza remembered the ever-intrusive photographers that surrounded her aunt, including one who approached Diana during a beach outing.
"Obviously it could have been quite terrifying for us, being so young and not understanding what was happening,” she said. “But she turned it into a game of who could get back to the car first. It was amazing how she protected us in a way that made us feel safe and not frightened. We had no idea what she was doing at the time."
