The Car Received by Princess Diana from Charles as an Engagement Gift, Sold at Auction
According to CNN, the auction house estimated that the car - a 1981 Ford Escort Ghia - will be sold for 30,000 - 40,000 pounds. The final amount was much more than expected.
With taxes added, the final sale price was 52,640 pounds (72.785 dollars).
The seller, whose identity has not been revealed, is a woman who was a great admirer of Princess Diana and who kept secret the origin of the car even to her friends.
Princess Diana received the car in May 1981, two months before the two married, according to the auction house Reeman Dansie. She drove the car until August 1982.The car, which had not been seen in public for 20 years, was sold on Tuesday with the original license plate, paint, and radio. The speedometer shows 83,000 miles.
"The Ford was Princess Diana's personal vehicle in the first and happiest part of her relationship with the Prince of Wales and there are many photos of her driving and even watching the prince play polo from the car," said the auction house.
The Ford was sold with a silver frog on the hood, a copy of a gift Diana received from her sister, Sarah Spencer.
It is not the first time that a vehicle that belonged to Princess Diana has been sold at auction for an impressive amount. Last year, an Audi convertible was sold for 58,000 pounds.
