The Reason Why the Organizer Of Miss Universe Was Denied Entry To Nicaragua
Nicaraguan authorities have barred the entry of Karen Celebertti, the national organizer of the Miss Universe competition. The move follows the victory of Sheynnis Palacios, who has become a symbol of opposition to the government of Daniel Ortega, according to reports from media outlets and opposition members in exile.
Celebertti, along with her daughter, was denied entry on Thursday at Managua airport and subsequently took a flight to Mexico. Various sources linked to the opposition against Daniel Ortega, whom they label as a 'dictator,' have reported these developments.
The Ortega government, as revealed by the Nicaraguan daily La Prensa, published in Costa Rica, has officially banned Karen Celebertti, the owner of the Miss Nicaragua franchise, and her daughter from entering the country.
The Miss Nicaragua Organizer Faces Blacklisting
Vice President Rosario Murillo, Ortega's wife, is allegedly preventing the return of Karen Celebertti to Nicaragua. Celebertti, the organizer of Miss Nicaragua, has recently achieved significant recognition, with one of her contestants winning the Miss Universe title after years of dedication, according to writer Gioconda Belli, currently in exile in Spain.
Reports from opposition media suggest that Karen Celebertti's residence in Managua was searched, and her husband, Martin Argüello, was temporarily detained. The government has not yet issued any official comments on this matter.
Since becoming the first representative of Central America to win the beauty contest in San Salvador, the 23-year-old Sheynnis Palacios has become a symbol for the opposition.
Photographs from 2018, showing Palacios waving a Nicaraguan flag during anti-government protests that resulted in over 300 deaths, resurfaced widely after her victory. The images prompted people to take to the streets of Managua and other cities—a situation unprecedented since the ban on gatherings five years ago.
Vice President Murillo criticized the publication of these photos on Wednesday, labeling it as "cruel and malicious terrorist communication."
