However, there appears to be a comeback of sorts for the Birkin in the world of celebrities, so it's no longer the exclusive domain of rising stars.
And that's where the two things diverge: on Instagram, the Birkin bag is arranged in dreamy carousels, looking brand-new and posing with immaculate coffee table books.
In contrast, the Birkin bag appears to be worn as a badge of authentic living in paparazzi photos. It can be customized with charms and trinkets, like Dua Lipa and Anne Hathaway, or it can be overstuffed and overflowing with papers, like Kim Kardashian's enormous version. At times, the Birkin can even be seen with pet dogs, like Irina Shayk.

US reality television star Kim Kardashian has a thing for Birkin bags. Over the years, she has carried several hues and sizes of the Hermès design.
However, this week, she upped the ante by carrying a large crocodile model that is big enough to squeeze her kids inside while she went to business meetings.
While strolling down a New York street, the 43-year-old star of "Kardashians" appeared to be carrying what looks to be a brand-new gray Haut à courroies "HAC" bag, which will cost fashion enthusiasts $110,000 on the resale market.
Although Kardashian designed it to be a trip bag, she used it as a business tote instead, packing it full of what looked to be files and a notebook before entering an office building.
The founder of Skims wore a gray fur coat that matched her huge purse, black sunglasses, and a slicked-back hairstyle.
Also, Kim Kardashian accessorized her outfit casually with a black hoodie, matching baggy trousers, and black boots, all while carrying that incredibly expensive bag, according to Page Six.
The Enormous Style
Kim Kardashian, a mother of four, is not the first person in her family to sport the huge fashion.
Kylie Jenner, 26, and her former partner Travis Scott own a tan version of the 50cm bag each. Jenner shared a photo of the pair's matching Birkins on Instagram the previous year.
Cardi B and Offset are also part of the matching Birkin club. In a 2021 picture, the rapper is seen flaunting what looks to be Kim's bag in a camouflaged form.
Kim has another enormous Birkin, which was a present from her ex-husband Kanye West, in addition to her gray HAC bag. It is bespoke tan in color and features a surrealist artwork of naked women by George Condo.
Also, the founder of Skkn by Kim possesses a Himalaya Birkin, which is regarded as the most costly bag in the world, and she casually brought it to a soccer tournament this summer along with many other hues of lesser Birkins.
