Domenico Dolce: The Mastermind Behind Dolce & Gabbana

Italian fashion designer Domenico Mario Assunto Dolce is the Sicilian half of the legendary fashion powerhouse Dolce & Gabbana.

His full name is deeply symbolic, reflecting the strong cultural and religious influences of Southern Italy. The name Assunto derives from the Latin assumpta, referring to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, while his entire name - Domenico Mario Assunto Dolce - is almost a Magnificat in itself, a tribute to faith and heritage.

The Roman phrase "Nomen est omen", meaning "The name is a sign," resonates strongly with Dolce’s journey.

"We built our fashion around three fundamental concepts: Sicily, tailoring, and tradition. Our dream is to create a style that is timeless and to design clothes with such a strong personality that, at first glance, anyone can immediately say without a shadow of a doubt: this is Dolce & Gabbana." - Domenico Dolce.

The Life Journey of Domenico Dolce

Born in Polizzi Generosa, Sicily, in 1958, Domenico Dolce grew up in a family deeply rooted in the textile trade.

His father was a tailor, while his mother managed a clothing and fabric store. This early exposure to craftsmanship and style shaped his passion for fashion from a young age.

Determined to follow his calling, Dolce initially enrolled at Istituto Marangoni in Milan, a prestigious fashion design school. However, confident in his skills and eager to dive into the industry, he dropped out before completing his degree.

He then secured a job at a renowned Milanese design studio, where he crossed paths with Stefano Gabbana in 1980, through their mutual connection with designer Giorgio Correggiari.

By 1982, Dolce and Gabbana began working together, initially as freelance designers for various fashion houses.

Their collaboration proved so successful that, in 1983, they made the bold decision to leave Correggiari and pursue their own creative visions separately—only to reunite soon after to form what would become one of the most iconic fashion labels in history.

Dolce & Gabbana Years

In 1985, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana officially launched their fashion house, Dolce & Gabbana S.p.A., making their runway debut at Milano Collezioni’s Nuovi Talenti (New Talents) in October of the same year.

As the partnership’s tailoring expert, Dolce was responsible for designing prototypes and perfecting garment construction. He played a crucial role in ensuring the quality of each piece through a meticulous fitting process.

Dolce also had the vision to collaborate with photographer Ferdinando Scianna, a move that significantly elevated Dolce & Gabbana's brand recognition across Italy. The brand continued to make waves in the fashion industry, debuting its first independent collection, titled "Real Women," in March 1986.

With its imaginative fusion of color, innovation, and timeless craftsmanship, the Rainbow Collection embodies Dolce & Gabbana’s signature aesthetic—an extravagant celebration of Italian beauty and artistry.

Disputes & Controversies

Hong Kong Photo Ban

On January 5, 2012, reports emerged that Hong Kong residents were prohibited from photographing Dolce & Gabbana window displays at their local flagship stores.

Security guards at the brand’s Canton Road location claimed the sidewalk outside was private property and enforced the ban, preventing passersby from taking pictures.

By January 8, the incident had sparked international media coverage and led to several days of public protests in Hong Kong.

Local news outlets speculated that the photo ban was imposed at the request of wealthy Chinese government officials who wished to conceal details of their luxury purchases, referencing previous cases such as Zhou Jiugeng, a Nanjing official exposed by online users for his extravagant lifestyle.

On January 18, 2012, Dolce & Gabbana issued a formal apology from their Milan headquarters, clarifying that the brand itself had no involvement in the incident.

Tax Evasion Case

In 2013, an Italian court found Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana guilty of tax evasion and sentenced them to 20 months of suspended imprisonment.

The case involved allegations that the designers had failed to declare millions of euros in revenue linked to their Luxembourg-based holding company, Gado Sarl.

The designers consistently denied the charges and appealed the ruling. In October 2014, Italy’s highest appellate court overturned the conviction, fully acquitting both designers of any wrongdoing.

Honors & Awards

Over the years, Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce have received numerous prestigious awards in recognition of their contributions to fashion and culture.

In 1991, they were awarded the International Woolmark Prize, their first major honor in the fashion industry.

In 1993, Dolce & Gabbana Parfum won the Best Fragrance of the Year award.

In 2009, they received the Ambrogino d’Oro (Gold Medal) from the City of Milan, one of the city’s highest honors. However, in 2014, they announced plans to return the award in protest after a member of the city council accused them of tax evasion.

In 2014, Gabbana, Dolce, and film director Baz Luhrmann were honored at the third annual La Fondazione NY Awards at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York City. The nonprofit La Fondazione NY recognizes and supports emerging Italian and American artists.

Reflecting on their deep connection to cinema, Gabbana stated during the event: "We live with movies – our inspiration all the time is movies, and we make our collections like a movie."

The Legacy

Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce have cemented their status as two of the most influential fashion designers in the world.

Their bold and extravagant designs - characterized by sequins, platform heels, rich embroidery, and vibrant colors - have become instantly recognizable. Their ability to blend Sicilian heritage, baroque influences, and modern sensuality has not only reshaped luxury fashion but also defined an era of Italian couture.

Dolce & Gabbana's philosophy remains centered on self-expression and authenticity, as Dolce once stated: "We have never considered our brand superior or inferior to any other, and we have never spoken about our work in comparison to anyone else’s. We are ourselves; we have never had the presumption to please everyone, but we believe in the utmost liberty to express oneself."
