CODA tells the story of a teenager named Ruby, the only non-hearing member of a family affected by deafness. When her family's fishing company is threatened, Ruby faces a powerful inner conflict, caught between her desire to pursue her passion for music at Berklee College of Music and her fears of abandoning her parents.Incidentally, the film's title, CODA, is an acronym that stands for "Child of Deaf Adult".

The 94th Academy Awards gala took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The event was hosted by actresses Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes. Jessica Chastain won the Best Actress in a Leading Role award for her role in Tammy Faye's Eyes. The award was presented to her by Sir Anthony Hopkins.
Will Smith was awarded the statuette for "Best Actor in a Leading Role" for his performance in "King Richard". "I want to apologize to the Academy," said the tearful actor, who caused a moment of stupefaction in the hall after he angrily went on stage to slap comedian Chris Rock who had just made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who suffers from alopecia, a significant hair loss.
"Love makes you do crazy things," Will Smith said after receiving his trophy.
