166-Carat Diamond Discovered In A Mine In Botswana

Lucara Diamond, a company specializing in the exploration and exploitation of diamonds, announces the recovery of a 166-carat type IIa precious stone in the Karowe mine in Botswana.

According to the Canada-based company, this is its first significant discovery made in 2024.

"Lucara is pleased to announce the ongoing recovery of large, high-quality diamonds from the Karowe Mine. This diamond is the 328th stone over 100 carats since we commenced mining in 2012.

This latest recovery further supports the economic rationale for investing in the underground expansion project that will extend mine life to at least 2040", said William Lamb, President & Chief Executive Officer of Lucara Diamond.

The Mine In Botswana Is The Source Of Many Impressive Diamonds
The diamond is the 328th stone over 100 carats discovered since the company began mining operations in 2012.

On August 10, 2023, the Canadian diamond miner announced it recovered a 1,080.1-carat Type IIa from the Karowe mine in Botswana. The diamond measured 82.2mm by 42.8mm by 34.2mm. Lucara said the "top" white stone is "high quality".

But the most remarkable gemstone ever discovered by Lucara was Lesedi La Rona, previously known in the media as Karowe AK6 or Quad.

Lesedi La Rona ranks as the fourth-largest diamond ever unearthed and the third-largest of gem quality. It was uncovered in the Karowe mine on November 16, 2015.

In 2017, the British jeweler Graff acquired the raw diamond for $53 million. By April 2019, Graff had meticulously crafted it into a single large emerald-cut diamond named the Graff Lesedi La Rona, boasting a weight of 302.37 carats (60.47 g; 2.13 oz), accompanied by 66 smaller stones.

Lucara Diamond owns 100% of the Karowe diamond mine, located in the central-northern part of Botswana, approximately 512 kilometers from the capital, Gaborone.

In operation since 2012, the Karowe Mine serves as the focal point for Lucara's activities and developmental initiatives.
