Some Of The Greatest Diamond Jewelry Ever Worn At The Cannes Film Festival

The long-awaited Cannes Film Festival has begun and, for sure, the stars who will walk the red carpet at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès will delight us with both provocative outfits and breathtaking diamond jewelry.

The famous Croisette in the resort town has been the focal point of the film festival since its inception in 1946.

The classic setting for showcasing stunning diamonds, Cannes is known for its rigorous formal dress code, which always demands couture designs and megawatt-sized gems and jewels.

Every spring, a glittering array of international movie stars and supermodels travels to the south of France to walk the red carpet that leads to the convention center's stairs.

Given that the event is just at the beginning and there is still time for the stars to amaze us with their clothing and jewelry preferences, let’s go down memory lane and see some of the most extraordinary natural diamond jewelry worn at the Cannes Film Festival over the years. And by whom.

Sophia Loren

Italian actress Sophia Loren attended a reception at the Salon des Ambassadeurs on the first night of the 1955 Cannes Film Festival. She wore a white lace, strapless ball gown designed by Emilio Schuberth, the Italian "tailor of the stars".

She accessorized her look with sophisticated opera gloves and a striking necklace made of real diamonds that turned heads.

Elizabeth Taylor

In 1957, Elizabeth Taylor went to the Cannes Film Festival with her third husband, Mike Todd, a producer, to support his movie, Around the World in 80 Days.

She wore an antique Victorian 1880 diamond tiara, enormous diamond chandelier earrings, and a diamond brooch with her beautifully pleated chiffon gown, of course.

Both the 1957 Academy Awards and the Golden Globe Awards were held in the same year that Taylor wore her renowned tiara.

Princess Diana

Taking inspiration from Grace Kelly's blue gown in the 1955 film To Catch a Thief, Princess Diana wore a sky blue strapless gown by Catherine Walker with a matching neck scarf to her first and only Cannes Film Festival in 1987.

Large drop earrings set in an elaborate natural diamond cluster adorned the royal's ensemble. The Princess of Wales wore the baubles to a 1987 Munich Banquet, a 1989 Moulin Rouge performance, an official trip to Brazil in 1991, and other events.

These were undoubtedly Diana's favorites.

Naomi Campbell
In 2004, Naomi Campbell was part of the festival circuit, first walking the red carpet for The Ladykillers premiere and then joining Fawaz Gruosi, the owner of the Swiss brand, at the De Grisogono Party at the VIP Club.

She accessorized her white gown with a necklace by De Grisogono. Her neck was encircled by fuchsia beads, and at the end hung a solitaire oval-shaped diamond.

Claudia Schiffer
German supermodel Claudia Schiffer showed off her swirling geometric natural diamond necklace on the Cannes red carpet in 2007 while wearing a navy blue tulle pleated mermaid gown with the ideal plunging neckline.

Jane Fonda
Both Jane Fonda and Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele, the artistic director and co-president of Chopard, wore a 160-carat cushion-cut blue sapphire necklace on the Croisette in 2011. The necklace had previously been worn by Isabelle Huppert in Cannes in 2009.

Rihanna
In 2017, Rihanna turned heads on the red carpet in a dramatic white Christian Dior gown. She wore enormous jewels, such as emerald and diamond earrings, a pear-shaped diamond bracelet, and - most importantly - a diamond floral bracelet that encircled her wrist.

The arm candy was part of her Haute Joaillerie collaboration, "Rihanna Loves Chopard," which she co-designed with Caroline Scheufele, co-president of Chopard.

Selena Gomez

The Bulgari "Dancing Diamonds" Cinemagia High Jewelry line, which included a diamond cocktail ring, stud earrings, and a geometric statement necklace, was worn by Selena Gomez at her 2019 Cannes premiere.

Julia Roberts

When Julia Roberts showed up at Cannes in 2016 wearing a Chopard necklace adorned with diamonds and emeralds, she raised the standard.

Roberts accessorized her Louis Vuitton suit ensemble in 2022 with a Chopard necklace, which featured a rare yellow diamond weighing over 100 carats surrounded by pear and cushion-shaped diamonds totaling over 54 carats.

The purpose of the necklace was to present the Trophée Chopard to an emerging young actor and actress.

Anne Hathaway

Wearing a magnificent statement necklace made of sapphire and natural diamonds, Anne Hathaway walked the red carpet at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival to mark the debut of her film Armageddon Time.

Hathaway went viral for her Bulgari Mediterranean Reverie necklace from Eden The Garden of Wonders high jewelry collection, which featured intricately displayed white natural diamonds and a 107-carat royal blue cushion-cut Sri Lankan sapphire center stone. Hathaway was wearing a classic white sequin Armani Privé column gown.

Ashley Graham

Ashley Graham showed up in 2023 at the Cannes Film Festival wearing the most exquisite Chopard diamond High Jewelry.

She accessorized her voluptuous Dolce & Gabbana gown with layered necklaces, diamond hoop earrings, and stacked flower studs.
