Antique French 1819 1838 Baroque Louis XV 18K Gold Agate Snuff Box
French Snuff Box Agate 18K Gold
An exceptional and exceedingly rare oval snuff box, crafted in Paris, France, during the Second French Restoration period between 1818 and 1838. This exquisite piece is designed in the opulent Baroque and Louis XV styles, showcasing a mythological scene of Venus and Cupid, with Cupid holding an arrow.
Expertly fashioned from translucent gray-brown agate, the box is adorned with meticulously sculpted repoussé detailing in 18-karat yellow gold. It features a hinged lid, further enhanced by the inclusion of a single rose-cut diamond.
The scene portrays Venus seated in her seashell chariot, pulling Cupid back to take away his arrow. In Greek mythology, Cupid is known as Eros, the youthful son of Aphrodite, goddess of love, beauty, and fertility. In Roman mythology, Cupid, the son of Venus and Mars, the god of war, served as his mother’s assistant, channeling the power of love and bestowing it upon mortals.
