Antique Imperial Russian Nikolai Alekseyev Silver-Gilt Cloisonné Enamel Beaker

Sale price$2,950.00

A Late 19th-Century Moscow Enamel Cup in 88-Zolotnik Silver

This exceptional antique Imperial Russian beaker was crafted in Moscow by renowned silversmith Nikolai Alekseyev, also recorded as Nikolay Alexeyev, during the late 19th century.

The compact silver-gilt cup is richly decorated in the cloisonné enamel technique, with scrolling floral and foliate motifs rendered in deep cobalt blue, powder blue, white and red enamel. Fine twisted silver wires define each element against a dark stippled ground, while geometric enamel borders frame the upper and lower portions of the design.

A repeating blue-and-white zigzag band encircles the upper body, complemented by delicate floral motifs and elegant symmetrical scrollwork. The interior and exposed silver surfaces retain a warm gilt finish.

The underside is impressed with the maker’s Cyrillic “НА” mark for Nikolai Alekseyev, together with the 88-zolotnik silver standard and Moscow assay marks. The 88 standard corresponds to approximately 91.7% silver. Comparable silver-gilt cloisonné enamel beakers by Alekseyev have been catalogued as Moscow works dating to around the 1890s.

Measuring only 2 inches high, this finely detailed cup is a particularly charming example of Imperial Russian enamel work and a compelling addition to a collection of antique silver, Russian decorative arts or objects of vertu.

Comparable Alekseyev beakers are described by major auction houses as Moscow silver-gilt cloisonné enamel works bearing the 88 standard.
