Antique Shakudo Gold Natural Pearl and Diamond Drop Earrings
Edo Period Japanese Shakudo Fuchi-Kashira Earrings with GIA-Reported Natural Saltwater Pearls
An exceptional pair of antique Shakudo natural pearl and diamond drop earrings, created from Japanese Edo period fuchi-kashira elements and later transformed into one-of-a-kind wearable jewels. The original Shakudo plaques date to the Edo period, 1603–1868, and were originally part of Japanese sword or knife handle fittings.
Shakudo is a traditional Japanese alloy, primarily composed of copper with a small amount of gold, prized for its deep dark patina and subtle surface richness. Historically, Shakudo was often used in finely worked Japanese sword fittings, where artisans used techniques such as inlay, engraving, and relief decoration to depict scenes from nature, folklore, and daily life.
The antique Shakudo elements are decorated in gold and silver takazogan relief work, depicting insects and botanical motifs with remarkable detail. One drop shows a grasshopper among leaves, while the other features two wasps and a cricket, with an additional wasp above foliage. The dark patinated Shakudo ground creates a dramatic contrast against the gold and silver decoration, giving the earrings a rich, sculptural, and highly collectible character.
The Edo period elements have been later mounted as earrings in handmade 18K rose gold, with natural pearl tops and diamond accents. The earrings are set with two natural button pearls of opposite colors, one white and one gray, creating a refined asymmetry that complements the antique Japanese metalwork. The pearl tops are surrounded by 169 single-cut diamonds, weighing approximately 1.05 carats total, adding subtle brilliance while allowing the historic Shakudo work to remain the focus.
The two button pearls are accompanied by GIA Report No. 1236292438, dated May 21, 2024, stating that the pearls are natural saltwater pearls, Pinctada species, with no indications of treatment. The white pearl weighs approximately 3.82 carats and measures 8.7 × 7.5 mm. The gray pearl weighs approximately 3.61 carats and measures 8.2 × 7 mm.
Also included are the original signed Shakudo elements from the knife handles, preserved separately for display. This adds important collector interest and gives the earrings additional historical context beyond their wearable design.
A rare and highly distinctive pair of antique Shakudo earrings, uniting Japanese Edo period craftsmanship with GIA-reported natural saltwater pearls, rose gold, and diamonds. Ideal for collectors seeking a jewel with history, craftsmanship, rarity, and strong visual character.
Collector Appeal
These earrings are especially desirable because they bring together multiple important collecting categories: Edo period Japanese metalwork, Shakudo fuchi-kashira sword fittings, natural untreated saltwater pearls, handmade 18K rose gold mounting, and diamond-set fine jewelry design. The insect and foliage motifs add particular charm and rarity, as Shakudo elements with nature scenes are highly appreciated by collectors for their artistry, detail, and cultural character. The later transformation into earrings preserves the antique Japanese elements while making them wearable as one-of-a-kind jewelry.

How do I know a piece is authentic, and can I trust DSF?
Buying fine jewelry online takes trust, especially at this level. DSF Antique Jewelry is a New York–based dealer with over 50 years of fine jewelry expertise. Every piece is examined for authenticity and condition before it is listed — we assess hallmarks, maker's marks, metal content, gemstones, and construction consistent with the stated period or designer. For signed pieces such as Cartier, Buccellati, or Van Cleef & Arpels, we verify maker's marks and signatures. We're glad to send additional photographs of any hallmark, or speak with you directly, before you decide.
Why does antique gold look different, and is surface wear normal?
Antique pieces were often made in gold standards less common today, such as 15ct (used in Britain only between 1854 and 1932), 9ct, or higher-karat continental gold, which give a warmer tone than typical modern 14k. Light surface wear, softened edges, and a gentle patina are normal and expected on antique jewelry — they reflect the age and authenticity of the piece, not flaws. We describe the true condition of every item honestly in its listing.
What do the hallmarks and maker's marks mean?
Hallmarks are small stamped marks that identify the metal standard, and often the maker, assay office, and date. They are one of the best tools for authenticating antique jewelry. We identify and explain the marks we find on each piece in its description, and we're happy to send close-up photographs of any hallmark on request so you can see exactly what you're buying.
Can pieces be resized or adjusted?
It depends on the piece. Many antique rings can be resized, but bands with all-around engraving, thin shanks, or gemstones near the base may be limited in how far they can safely go, and some pieces are best left as-is to preserve their integrity. We list each item's measurements as they currently are. If you're unsure whether something can be safely adjusted, contact us before buying and we'll give you an honest assessment for that specific piece.
How should I care for and store fine jewelry?
Clean gently with a soft cloth, avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and chlorine, and store pieces separately so they don't scratch one another. Remove rings and bracelets for heavy manual tasks. Antique gold is softer than modern alloys, so period pieces are best enjoyed with normal care. Treated well, fine antique jewelry lasts for generations — many of our pieces are already a century or more old and still beautiful.
