Georgian Gold Carnelian Intaglio Men's Ring

Sale price$7,500.00

A Classical Portrait Intaglio in a Substantial Antique Gold Mount

A distinguished Georgian-era ring centered with an oval carnelian intaglio carved with the profile of a classical male figure. The warm orange-red stone is translucent, allowing light to pass through the carnelian and reveal the delicately engraved portrait with remarkable depth.

The sitter is shown in profile with finely modeled facial features, swept hair, and draped clothing, reflecting the enduring influence of Greek and Roman portraiture on Georgian jewelry. The carving is recessed into the stone in the traditional intaglio technique, rather than raised above the surface as with a cameo.

The oval carnelian is secured within a simple gold bezel and framed by a substantial polished mount. Broad shoulders taper into a comfortable shank, giving the ring a bold presence while keeping the engraved gemstone as the focal point. The open-backed setting allows the natural color and translucency of the carnelian to be fully appreciated.

A handsome antique jewel with strong historical character, suitable for wear as a statement ring or for inclusion in a collection of carved gemstones, seals, and Georgian jewelry.

The Art of Intaglio

Intaglio carving is created by engraving an image beneath the surface of a gemstone. Historically, rings of this kind could be pressed into wax to produce a raised seal impression, although many finely carved examples were also worn as expressions of taste, education, and an appreciation for antiquity.

Carnelian was especially valued for intaglios because its warm color, durability, and translucency allowed engraved details to remain crisp and visible.

Condition

The ring is in very good antique condition with surface wear, fine scratches, and age-related marks consistent with previous use.

The carnelian displays natural variations in color and internal characteristics. Minor surface wear may be present under close examination, but the carved portrait remains clearly visible and the stone appears securely held within the setting.

Collector’s Note

Portrait intaglios became particularly fashionable during the Georgian period, when renewed interest in classical antiquity influenced jewelry, architecture, and the decorative arts. Such rings were admired both as personal ornaments and as miniature works of sculpture.

This example is especially appealing for its substantial proportions, warm translucent carnelian, and restrained gold setting, which gives the ring a timeless and masculine character.

The identity of the portrait has not been independently confirmed.
