The Ross Clan's history is rooted in legend and valor. In the 10th century, Beolan, a formidable chief in northern Scotland, married Rollo the Viking's daughter. Rollo would become the first Duke of Normandy. Their progeny, known as mormaers or earls of Ross, were sometimes dubbed Clan Anrias. Interestingly, the early Ross earls never adopted "Ross" as a surname, setting them apart from their followers. In 1214, Fearchar MacinTagart, dubbed 'Son of the Priest' and Earl of Ross, played a pivotal role in quashing a Highland rebellion alongside Alexander II, earning knighthood in 1234 and official recognition of his earldom. His reward included lands in North Argyll, now known as Wester Ross, and for his son, territories on Skye and Lewis. Meanwhile, the Ross family in Ayrshire, originating from Yorkshire in the 12th century, held lands as vassals of the de Moreville Family. By the 13th century, members bearing the Ross surname paid homage to Edward I of England in 1296, illustrating the clan's widespread influence and complex loyalties.
