Rare 17th Century Silver Baby Rattle with Engrave Spherical Ends and Bell Pendants

Sale price$3,950.00

Rare 17th Century Silver Child’s Rattle with Engraved Globular Ends

An exceptionally rare 17th-century silver child’s rattle, distinguished by its elongated double-ended form and richly worked globular terminals. Each rounded end is decorated with hand-worked foliate and geometric motifs, displaying the irregular character and individual craftsmanship associated with early silver objects.

A slender tubular handle connects the two ornamental terminals, while small suspended silver pendants create gentle movement and sound. The naturally aged surface retains a deep patina with warmer gilt-toned traces, emphasizing the relief of the decoration and the rattle’s considerable age.

Silver rattles became important luxury objects during the Renaissance and were often presented to children from prosperous families. Beyond their practical purpose, they served as symbols of protection, family status and prosperity. Period portraits from the 16th and 17th centuries occasionally depict children wearing precious-metal rattles suspended from the waist.

Surviving examples from this early period are uncommon, particularly those retaining their principal structure and suspended elements. This piece offers collectors an evocative connection to childhood, domestic life and early European silversmithing.
