The 7th Annual Jewelry Design Competition by GIA Celebrates Rising Talent
The seventh Gianmaria Buccellati Foundation Award for Excellence in Jewelry Design was recently bestowed by the Institute.
Presented during the annual GIA Alumni Collective celebration in Tucson, AZ, the award was granted to Suhan Wang, a graduate of the GIA school in Taipei.
Established in collaboration with the Gianmaria Buccellati Foundation in 2018, this award aims to acknowledge exceptional design talent among GIA students worldwide.

Each year, over 200 students' submissions undergo scrutiny by peers, faculty, and a panel of distinguished judges to select a deserving recipient. A showcase of finalists' work will be curated and exhibited in Tucson and New York.

Larry French, Chief Officer for North American Strategies at the foundation, conveyed congratulations to Ms. Suhan Wang, this year's laureate, and commended all participants for their contributions.
He expressed gratitude towards the skilled GIA design instructors for nurturing the students' creative journey, echoing the sentiment that jewelry design, cherished by the foundation's founder Gianmaria Buccellati, is indeed an art form worthy of celebration.
“On behalf of the Gianmaria Buccellati Foundation and Rosa Maria Buccellati, we want to congratulate Ms. Suhan Wang, this year’s award winner, plus all the other designers whose work has honored this competition,” said Larry French, chief officer for North American strategies at the foundation.
“We appreciate the talented GIA design instructors whose skill and efforts helped the students on their journey to celebrate the art of jewelry design in the highest way, an art that meant so much to our founder Gianmaria Buccellati.”
The judging panel for this year's competition comprised esteemed figures in the jewelry industry, including Nanz Aalund, Cathy Calhoun, Victoria Gomelsky, Charles Lewton-Brain, Remy Rotenier, and Shelly Sergent.
Ms. Wang, the victor of the 2024 competition, shared the inspiration behind her winning piece, drawing from the serene allure of fruits within lush jungles. She reflected on the rewarding experience of her time at GIA, which fostered her growth from zero to one and instilled higher expectations, serving as a driving force in her career.
The 2024 Gianmaria Buccellati Foundation Award for Excellence in Jewelry Design is currently open for submissions, inviting students enrolled in GIA's Jewelry Design course to participate.

GIA's Jewelry Design course encompasses instruction in drafting, shading, design theory, and illustration across various mediums. Upon completion, students develop a portfolio showcasing their handiwork, supplemented by a digital copy.
The course is available at GIA campuses worldwide, including Bangkok, Carlsbad, Hong Kong, London, Mumbai, New York, Taipei, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, with additional offerings in Jewelry Design & Technology, Comprehensive Computer-Aided Design, and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) for Jewelry, as well as the Graduate Jeweler Program.
